Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADD/ADHD)

Attention deficit disorders (ADD/ADHD) are developmental and behavioral disorders that affect 3% to 5% of all school-age children. These disorders usually become apparent in childhood. Some children will evidence hyperactivity (ADHD), while others will not (ADD or inattentive type). Years ago it was widely thought that children would "grow out of it". Present research indicates it can persist into adulthood, affecting about 60% of adults who had an attention deficit disorder in childhood. Undiagnosed and untreated attention deficit disorder quite often causes significant impairment in relationships and in school and work performance.

While there is no known cause for attention deficit disorder, it is widely thought to be a neurological disorder. It is not caused by poor parenting or environment. Present research indicates the most effective treatment is a combination of counseling and medication.
